ESI (Employee State Insurance) is a self-financing health insurance scheme and social security for the workers or employee in India . The scheme provides Employees with a comprehensive Social Security Scheme for protecting the employees during sickness, injury or disability.
Employer should register ESI for the factory or establishment with ESIC (Employee State Insurance Corporation ) within 15 days which is applicable to the ESI Act. ESI is the autonomous corporation under Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India .
The funds for the employees and their families are managed by ESI through its large network of branch offices, hospitals etc.. in accordance to the ESI Act 1948. So , the employee can enjoy all the benefits including full range of medical's, surgical, diabetes treatment etc...
While registering ESI , using form 01 filing is done along with a separate sheet containing the name and address of the Establishment, number of employees, nature of duty and name, designation and address of the manager controlling such persons, in respect of office situated outside. After the application pass through compliance and satisfied ESIC (Employee State Insurance Corporation ) regional office will allot a code number to the employer.

WHAT IS ITS APPLICABILITY?
ESI Act 1948 applies to factories and commercial establishments by employing 10 or more persons operating in the entire state of Goa. All the employers including casual and contractors employees who are drawing wages up to Rs. 15,000/- per month (excluding over time)are entitled to the comprehensive social security protection under ESI Act by registering the factories/establishments under ESI Act and paying contribution on wages @75% as employers share and 1.75% as employees share
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AVAILABLE UNDER ESI SCHEME?
Apart from providing medical benefits including super specialty treatment, insured persons, and their family members, ESI Scheme also provides cash compensation to insured persons for loss of wages or earning capacity in times of physical distress arising out of sickness or employment injury. Maternity benefit to insured women, family pension to the dependents in case of death due to employment injury, unemployment allowance, physical/vocational rehabilitation etc. are available under ESI Scheme. Commuting accidents are also covered under ESI Act at present.
HOW TO DEVELOP A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ESIC AND EMPLOYERS?
ESIC values a healthy relationship between its stakeholders, principal employers/owners should personally ensure that monthly ESI contribution submitted and employees are registered. Even if consultants are engaged for looking after ESI matters, it is in the interest of the principal employer to personally confirm the timely ESI compliance to avoid unnecessary burden of interest, i.e. 12% and penal damages of up to 25% for the delayed remittance of ESI contribution as well as to avoid contribution assessment proceedings and criminal prosecutions.
